Q – “Handbrake problems help! I used to use handbrake to rip DVD movies but now I can’t even do it anymore. I have a new laptop. When I got it all set up and ripped the next DVD, the pictures and sound are all scrambled. Should I download and install the libdvdcss.dll? How can I do this? Please don’t recommend any alternatives that have only trail versions. Free DVD rippers that don’t require any payment will be fine. Oh and I’m a PC user.”

Best Answer: Firstly, libdvdcss was removed from this free DVD ripper version 0.9.2, and HandBrake cannot rip DVDs encrypted with CSS ever since. Secondly, whether downloading and installing VLC libdvdcss solves “HandBrake won’t work” problem depends on the type of your DVD copy protection.
What is libdvdcss?
libdvdcss = lib (library) + dvd (DVD) + css (Content Scrambling System, a kind of DVD copy protection)
To sum up, libdvdcss is part of the VideoLAN project, which alone is only a library that can find and guess keys to do the DVD decryption, so that CSS-protected DVDs will be played correctly. Together with media player software and DVD rippers, such as VLC and HandBrake, libdvdcss helps read and decrypt DVDs of different regions or encrypted with CSS. And because it uses a generated list of possible player keys, libdvdcss has never been legally challenged.

Where do I find libdvdcss?
VideoLAN, the project behind VLC Media Player, hosts the last stable version of the libdvdcss library for debian-based Linux distributions. For RPM-based distributions such as CentOS, Red Hat, Fedora, SUSE, take a look at this DVD support how-to.
Installation Method 1: install libdvdcss2 through .deb packages
This is the easiest way to install DVD support, it doesn’t involve using the command line. Download the i386 (32-bit systems) or amd64 (64-bitsystems) version of the libdvdcss2 package on the VideoLAN server. Open the downloaded file with the GDebi Package Installer, which is probably already installed on your system. Click install and you’re done already.
If you want to stick with the command line, install the downloaded .deb-package with the following command (use Tab ↹ to autocomplete the file name):
sudo dpkg -i libdvdcss2_version_arch_.deb
Installation Method 2: libdvdcss2 repositories
VLC has its own help page on how to install libdvdcss through its repositories. Check it out here and follow the instructions to install repository and public key. Finally you may install DVD support through your system’s package manager (e.g. Synaptic) or with the following command line:
sudo apt-get install libdvdcss2
You should now be able to play DVDs on Ubuntu, Linux Mint no-codecs flavors as well as other Debian-based Linux distros.
